Gloucester demolish Harlequins 48-0 to soar to top of Premiership
Gloucester climbed to the top of the Gallagher Premiership with a commanding 48-0 victory over Harlequins at Kingsholm, running in eight tries to back up their opening-day win at Exeter.
Gloucester moved to the summit of the Gallagher Premiership with a ruthless 48-0 dismantling of Harlequins at Kingsholm, crossing for eight tries in a one-sided contest that left the visitors with serious questions to answer.
The result followed Gloucester’s impressive opening-day win at Exeter’s Sandy Park, but this performance was far more emphatic — Harlequins were outplayed in every department and never threatened the scoreboard. The absence of England internationals Marcus Smith and Alex Dombrandt was noted, yet the scale of the defeat went well beyond personnel.
Ben Loader opened the scoring by collecting a crossfield kick from Charlie Atkinson, setting the tone for an afternoon of relentless pressure. Jac Morgan finished off a driving line-out after Will Evans was yellow-carded for persistent Harlequins infringements, and Will Trenholm surged over from close range before Charlie Atkinson brushed aside weak tackling to secure the bonus point. George Barton’s boot added the conversion for a 24-0 half-time lead.
Gloucester needed just four minutes after the restart to effectively end the contest, with Seb Atkinson and Caoilon Engefield both crossing in quick succession. Will Joseph and Barton then added further tries as the hosts continued to cut through a Harlequins defence that offered little resistance.
The afternoon was not entirely without concern for Gloucester. South African lock Jean Kleyn was forced off for a head injury assessment in the opening minute, though he returned twice during the match to play a significant role in the forward dominance that underpinned the victory.
Former Northampton captain George Furbank endured a miserable competitive debut for Harlequins, being substituted after 63 minutes as the visitors struggled to make any meaningful impact. A scoreless final quarter at least spared Quins the indignity of conceding more than 50 points, as Gloucester’s replacements disrupted the home side’s rhythm.
Barton finished with four conversions from the tee, while the eight try-scorers — Loader, Morgan, Trenholm, Charlie Atkinson, Seb Atkinson, Engefield, Joseph and Barton — underlined the depth of Gloucester’s attacking threat across the park.
