Rees-Zammit double dismantles champions Northampton as Bristol claim bonus-point win
Louis Rees-Zammit scored twice as Bristol dismantled Gallagher Premiership champions Northampton 41-26 at Ashton Gate, with Pat Lam's side also benefiting from a Saints side reduced to 13 men late on.
Louis Rees-Zammit scored two tries to lead Bristol to a commanding 41-26 bonus-point victory over Gallagher Premiership champions Northampton at Ashton Gate, delivering an early statement of intent from Pat Lam’s side in the new season.
Rees-Zammit, who had already crossed twice against Sale Sharks on the opening weekend, was the standout performer with ball in hand and made his presence felt in defence too, helping Bristol largely neutralise Northampton’s free-flowing attack. Harry Randall, Gabriel Oghre, Tom Jordan and a penalty try completed the scoring for the Bears, with James Williams converting three and adding a penalty.
Northampton were only a point adrift at the interval and remained in contention for much of the contest, with George Hendy (two), Alex Mitchell and Josh Kemeny all crossing, while Fin Smith kicked three conversions. But Saints were ultimately undone by their own indiscipline, finishing with 13 players after yellow cards for Tommy Freeman and Ion Neculai.
Bristol were sharp from the off, Oghre touching down after just seven minutes following an impressive lineout drive. Northampton responded almost immediately, Henry Pollock delivering a scoring pass to Hendy, but the Bears reasserted control and Rees-Zammit’s first try, finished in limited space, opened up an eight-point lead before half-time. Hendy’s second score for Saints kept the gap to a single point at the break.
The second half belonged to Bristol. Jordan extended the lead after the forwards built a dominant platform, and Randall’s score secured the bonus point before Rees-Zammit added his second to put the result beyond doubt. A penalty try completed the rout.
The afternoon was not without concern for Bristol, however. England centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg was carried off following a midfield collision that required prolonged treatment, though he was able to watch the second half from the touchline — a significant relief for Lam.
The result carries particular weight given context: Bristol had conceded 94 points across their two meetings with Northampton last May. Saturday’s performance suggested a very different dynamic this season.
