AFL returnee Grace Brooker recalled to Black Ferns squad for France three-Test series
Grace Brooker returns to the Black Ferns for the first time since her AFL stint, as New Zealand name a 30-player squad for next week's three-Test series against France. Ruahei Demant and Mia Anderson are also included despite recent calf injuries.
Grace Brooker has been recalled to the Black Ferns squad for the upcoming three-Test series against France, marking the midfielder’s first return to the national setup since she stepped away to play AFL last year. New Zealand head coach Whitney Hansen also confirmed that injured playmaker Ruahei Demant and loose forward Mia Anderson have both been named despite picking up calf injuries during the away leg of the WXV Global Series.
Brooker, who captains the Matatu in domestic competition, comes in as part of a reshaped 30-player group — down from 31 — after Alena Saili and Maia Davis were released to focus on the Black Ferns Sevens season.
“Grace brings a real level of diligence and experience to the group,” Hansen said. “Her understanding of the game combined with her ability to lead are invaluable, particularly when it comes to preparing the team and challenging those around her to be better. We’re looking forward to having her back in the environment.”
On the injury front, the news is cautiously positive. Demant, the experienced first-five eighth with 56 caps, has returned to on-field activities following her calf complaint, while Anderson’s timeline remains unclear though she has been retained in the squad. Both absences had been a concern after the WXV Global Series away fixtures.
The series against France begins next week, with the Black Ferns looking to build on their WXV campaign. Brooker’s five Test caps and leadership credentials give Hansen additional options in midfield as the team prepares for a demanding home schedule.
