Zidane reveals his intentions: eight likely starters for France in Nations League

Zinédine Zidane is beginning his era as France manager with a squad of 23 players — including 20 outfield players — for four Nations League matches in eleven days, including trips to Turkey and Belgium. The squad selections and the manager’s press conference statements allow us to outline a likely starting XI.

In goal, Mike Maignan is the undisputed choice. Jean Butez, called up as a replacement for Robin Risser, and Guillaume Restes complete the hierarchy, with the latter appearing to occupy the number two spot.

In central defence, Dayot Upamecano is essential. In the absence of William Saliba, the second spot is open between Ibrahima Konaté, Maxence Lacroix and Jérémy Jacquet, the latter potentially benefiting from his impressive start to the season at Liverpool. In attack, the manager said he « really likes » Kylian Mbappé on the left wing in a 4-3-3. This positioning would place Ousmane Dembélé up front and Michael Olise on the right. With Mbappé ill ahead of the first match in Turkey, Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola could compete for his place. Estéban Lepaul, the only centre-forward on the list, should get playing time across the four matches.
