Xabi Alonso demands hard work as non-negotiable in first Chelsea interview
Xabi Alonso has outlined his core demand of Chelsea's players in his first interview since taking charge at Stamford Bridge, insisting a culture of hard work is essential as pre-season began on Thursday.
Xabi Alonso has made hard work his first public demand of Chelsea’s players, telling the squad in his opening interview as head coach that effort is non-negotiable as he begins building a new culture at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso was confirmed as Chelsea manager in May on a four-year deal, succeeding Liam Rosenior — who was replaced by caretaker Calum McFarlane for the final month of last season. The Spaniard officially started work on 1 July, with pre-season training at Cobham getting under way on Thursday.
“You can’t hold back anything, everything is for the team,” Alonso said. “Hard work is a must. We need to create that culture — it starts here in a daily process at Cobham.”
The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid midfielder also explained that the quality and depth of Chelsea’s squad was a key factor in his decision to take the role. “The potential of the team and squad made me really excited — to find a squad to work with, create a football idea, bring excitement to the stadium and connect with the fans,” he said.
Thursday’s opening session saw several first-team players report for duty, including Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian and Wesley Fofana, all of whom will now work under Alonso’s management for the first time.
The appointment marks a significant shift in direction for Chelsea, who cycled through multiple coaches in recent seasons. Alonso arrives with a strong reputation after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023-24, and the club will be hoping his emphasis on collective discipline can bring greater consistency to a squad that has underperformed relative to its investment.
