Jarell Quansah has been banned for two World Cup matches by Fifa following his red card in England’s last-16 victory over Mexico, ruling the Bayer Leverkusen defender out of Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final.

Quansah was dismissed after a VAR review for a reckless sliding challenge that saw his studs connect with the shin of Jesus Gallardo. Fifa found him in breach of Article 14 of their code of conduct, which mandates a two-match ban for serious foul play — doubling the standard one-game suspension.

England had been weighing up an appeal after Fifa controversially suspended USA striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban, a move that had been publicly lobbied for by US president Donald Trump. That precedent briefly raised hopes within the England camp that Quansah’s ban might similarly be reduced or overturned.

Instead, the outcome moved in the opposite direction. Rather than receiving a single-game suspension, Quansah now faces a two-match absence that will cover both the quarter-final and, should England progress, the semi-final. The only route back into the tournament for the defender would be a place in the final.

England face Norway in the quarter-final on Saturday, with the winner meeting either Argentina or Switzerland in the last four.
