Wolff admits Mercedes face tougher strategy calls as Russell closes on Antonelli

Toto Wolff has conceded that Mercedes face increasingly complex strategic decisions as George Russell’s championship revival tightens the gap to team-mate Kimi Antonelli, with the team principal speaking at a pre-event press conference at the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

Russell’s dominant pole-to-flag victory in Baku cut Antonelli’s lead from 81 points to 66, after the Italian rookie recovered from 16th on the grid to fifth to limit the damage from a qualifying error. With at least eight race weekends remaining, Russell’s title chances have shifted from near-impossible to unlikely — and the Briton has publicly committed to fighting back race by race.

The narrowing gap now forces Mercedes to weigh whether the optimal strategic call for one driver could compromise the other’s championship position. Wolff was candid about the challenge.

“Does it change the dynamic? I think from the overarching philosopher’s standpoint, not, because we want to give both drivers equal opportunity and to go for a championship,” Wolff said. “But the team comes first. That has always been the Mercedes philosophy. With George scoring big points, obviously he’s narrowed down the gap to Kimi. And that means we have to properly evaluate the calls that we make on track of how we manage the cars, because we need to make sure that they have the same opportunity, also when it comes to strategic calls.”

Mercedes can look to McLaren’s 2025 campaign as a cautionary tale. When Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were locked in an internal title fight, a series of strategic missteps — most notably leaving both drivers out under an early safety car at the Qatar Grand Prix while Max Verstappen and others pitted for fresh tyres — handed Verstappen an easy win and dragged the title fight all the way to Abu Dhabi.

Wolff acknowledged the difficulty of getting those calls right under pressure, noting that the stakes of each decision will only grow as the season approaches its conclusion. Russell, meanwhile, had to adapt his driving style significantly to the new 2026 regulations before finding his rhythm, but recent performances suggest he is now back near his best.
