Alonso commits to Aston Martin beyond 2026 as Stroll also extends amid team's difficult season

Fernando Alonso has ended months of uncertainty by signing a new contract with Aston Martin that extends his stay at the Silverstone team into the 2027 Formula 1 season. Lance Stroll has simultaneously renewed his own deal, meaning the team’s driver lineup remains unchanged heading into the next campaign.

Alonso, 45, had kept the paddock guessing for much of the year, with his previous contract due to expire at the end of the current 2026 campaign. The two-time world champion repeatedly said his decision hinged on the direction of the regulations, having voiced strong reservations about the new-for-2026 ruleset’s greater emphasis on electric power. His reluctance to commit publicly was also, in part, a calculated effort to apply pressure on Formula 1 leadership — he held meetings with both F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem during the period of uncertainty.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin,” said the 32-time race winner. “I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.”

Alonso’s time at Aston Martin has been a story of sharp contrasts. He arrived in a surprise switch from Alpine for the 2023 season and immediately delivered, collecting six podiums in his first eight grands prix and two more before the year was out. The momentum has since stalled sharply. Aston Martin was progressively outdeveloped by its rivals and has endured a difficult start to the 2026 regulations, hampered in part by an uncompetitive Honda power unit. The team sits tenth in the constructors’ standings with just three points after 15 rounds — all of them scored by Alonso — and is only ahead of newcomer Cadillac.

Stroll, who joined the team when it was still known as Racing Point and is set for his ninth season at the Silverstone outfit, also struck an upbeat tone about the renewal. “I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team,” said the Canadian. “There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me.”

Despite the team’s current struggles, both drivers have publicly backed Aston Martin’s long-term project, pointing to the infrastructure and personnel being assembled at its Silverstone campus as reasons for optimism beyond the difficult 2026 campaign.
