Edson Alvarez has issued a forceful public denial of allegations connecting him to a kidnapping, warning that his legal team has been instructed to pursue action against anyone making or spreading what the West Ham midfielder describes as false claims.

The 28-year-old Mexico captain is being linked to the alleged kidnapping of Juan José López Ordóñez, a producer who claims to have made a documentary about Alvarez’s career at a cost of over £150,000 (3.5 million pesos) — money he says remains unpaid. Ordóñez told Mexican entertainment magazine TVNotas that he was kidnapped two years ago after demanding payment.

Alvarez, who had previously stayed silent on the matter, posted a bilingual statement on Instagram addressing the claims directly. “I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me,” he wrote. “Over the past several months, my name and image have repeatedly been used to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me.”

The West Ham star acknowledged he had chosen not to respond until now, but said the accusations had crossed a line. “Attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line,” he said, adding that serious accusations must be put before the appropriate legal authorities rather than aired through media outlets he accused of prioritising “sensationalism and media exposure over accuracy and truth.”

Alvarez also addressed reports that have attempted to connect him to the situation through his former partner’s father, stating clearly: “I have nothing to do with the events being reported.”

“I will not allow my name to be used to fuel conflicts between third parties or to gain media exposure,” he added. “Therefore, given the seriousness of the statements that have been made, I have instructed my legal team to evaluate and pursue the appropriate legal action against any person who makes or disseminates false allegations against me.”

No charges have been filed against Alvarez, and no evidence linking him to the alleged kidnapping has been presented publicly.
