Weah settles it: « Impossible to compare Lamine Yamal to Mbappé, everyone knows he is far above »
Questioned on El Chiringuito after France's 3-0 Round of 16 victory over Sweden, 1995 Ballon d'Or winner George Weah refused any comparison between Kylian Mbappé, who scored his third brace of the World Cup, and a Lamine Yamal he judges still « growing ».
George Weah ended the debate in one sentence: « Everyone knows Mbappé is far above. » The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner spoke on El Chiringuito the day after the 2026 World Cup Round of 16, won by France against Sweden (3-0), Tuesday evening.
Kylian Mbappé had once again scored twice, bringing to three the number of braces he has scored since the start of the tournament. The France captain shares the top of the scoring chart alongside Lionel Messi, with the added bonus of two assists where the Argentine has none.
Questioned about the comparison between Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, Weah left no room for doubt. « Lamine Yamal is a very young boy, we cannot compare him to Mbappé, » he declared. « Mbappé is a phenomenon. Lamine Yamal is just growing. I simply hope he will continue this career. » Before concluding: « It is impossible to compare Lamine Yamal to Kylian Mbappé. »
The Spaniard arrived at the World Cup physically diminished and has had far less playing time than his French counterpart. He has scored only one goal, against Saudi Arabia, which nonetheless allowed him to become, at 18 years and 343 days, the youngest player in history to score at both a European Championship and a World Cup.
