Sent off against Italy, Upamecano leaves France squad before Belgium match
Sanctioned with two yellow cards in the France-Italy draw (1-1), Dayot Upamecano left the French camp on Saturday morning and returned to Munich, ruling him out of the final Nations League match against Belgium.
Dayot Upamecano left the France squad on Saturday morning, the day after his dismissal in the draw against Italy (1-1), counting for the 3rd day of the Nations League. The Bayern Munich central defender departed at 9:30 a.m. from Clairefontaine, in consultation with head coach Zinédine Zidane.
The player received two yellow cards against the Azzurri, in the 73rd and 85th minutes, both times against the same opponent: Moïse Kean. The first caution was given for words exchanged with the Italian striker; the second for a clear foul on the same player. Despite an overall solid performance, Upamecano could not control his nerves in the final quarter of an hour.
Direct consequence: the defender is suspended for the final match of this gathering, scheduled for Monday evening against Belgium (20:45). His departure echoes that of Kylian Mbappé, also absent for this meeting against the Red Devils, but for a different reason — knee pain sustained in the match against Turkey.
To compensate for Upamecano’s absence, Zidane should field the central defensive pairing used in the away match against Belgium, with Maxence Lacroix and Jérémy Jacquet paired in central defence.
