Olympique de Marseille collapsed for the third time in a row on Friday night, losing 1-0 away at Rennes, with two players bearing direct responsibility for this latest setback: Timothy Weah and Angel Gomes.

The American right-back acknowledged his shortcomings after the match. “We had difficulties, and I’m taking the defeat on myself. I’m the leader of this team and I didn’t play at 100% today. I’m lacking confidence and I need to do better on the goal,” he said. Weah indeed lost his duel with Al-Tamari, who was then able to deliver the decisive cross for Thomasson’s goal in the 53rd minute.

One minute before that Rennes goal, it was Angel Gomes who had missed the chance to open the scoring for Marseille. After an initial Amine Harit shot saved by Brice Samba, the former Lille player recovered the ball at the penalty spot. He took time to control it, then sent his shot well wide of goal. A miss all the more costly as it came immediately before the only goal of the match. It is not the first time the English midfielder has wasted a favorable situation: he had already missed a good chance in the match against Paris FC, when the score was 2-2.

Both players received the worst ratings from their teammates in the specialist press — 4/10 for Weah, 3/10 for Gomes — the only Marseille starters below average.

These individual errors come in a broader context of crisis within the club. After defeats to Monaco and Paris FC, this third consecutive loss increases pressure on the squad. Manager Bruno Genesio, who has been trying to protect his players publicly, did not hide a certain weariness after the match, suggesting that the difficulties go beyond purely sporting matters.
