Volkov outclasses Kuniev at UFC 333 and demands heavyweight title shot
Alexander Volkov extended his winning streak to three with a unanimous decision over Rizvan Kuniev at UFC 333, dominating on the feet and nearly finishing with a rear-naked choke. The Russian heavyweight is now calling on Dana White to finally grant him a shot at the belt.
Alexander Volkov delivered a composed, dominant performance against Rizvan Kuniev at UFC 333 on Saturday, earning a unanimous decision by scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 to extend his winning streak to three fights. With the victory, the Russian heavyweight immediately turned his attention to the title picture, publicly questioning why a shot at the belt continues to elude him.
“Good fight,” Volkov said post-fight. “I have a question for Dana White — I just started my professional career and I have about 20 fights in the UFC. What do I need to do for a title shot?”
Kuniev came out aggressive from the opening bell, throwing early kicks in an attempt to disrupt Volkov’s rhythm, but the taller Russian quickly established control with a sharp lead jab and measured kicks that kept his opponent at range. Volkov worked methodically through the first round, consistently moving forward and chipping away rather than hunting for a finish.
The second round followed a similar pattern. Volkov’s left jab repeatedly found its mark as Kuniev pressed forward looking for openings, and despite Kuniev taking greater risks as the fight progressed, Volkov absorbed the pressure and responded with clean, accurate striking. A calf kick midway through the round stung Kuniev before Volkov returned to targeting the head. Kuniev landed a spinning back fist that connected, but Volkov absorbed it without any visible effect.
The most dramatic moment came late in the fight when a grappling exchange allowed Volkov to take Kuniev’s back and lock in a rear-naked choke. Kuniev defended well and survived to the final horn, but the attempt underlined Volkov’s ability to threaten across multiple dimensions.
Volkov now appears to be in a holding pattern, likely awaiting the outcome of Ciryl Gane’s clash with Josh Hokit in November, with the winner expected to be his next target. The only scenario that could complicate his path to a title shot is the potential return of champion Tom Aspinall. Barring that, Volkov has built a compelling case that is becoming increasingly difficult for the UFC to ignore.
