Dominick Reyes announced himself as a renewed force in the light heavyweight division with a clinical first-round knockout of Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Reyes landed a sharp head kick to wobble Murzakanov, then closed the show with a left hand and ground-and-pound, with referee Mike Beltran waving it off at 2:40 of Round 1.

The two men spent much of the opening exchanges bouncing and circling, each probing for a clean opening. Murzakanov had edged the early exchanges by pressing forward with punches, but Reyes timed the head kick perfectly, leaving the Russian visibly shaken. With Murzakanov’s guard compromised, Reyes unloaded his signature left hand to put him on the canvas, then swarmed with ground-and-pound until Beltran intervened.

The victory gives Reyes back-to-back wins, following a split-decision nod over Johnny Walker in April. The two-time light heavyweight title challenger has now won five of his last six fights, improving his professional record to 17-5.

For Murzakanov, it is a second consecutive knockout defeat after entering the UFC with a perfect 16-0 record. Both losses have come by stoppage — Paulo Costa was the first to finish him — raising questions about his durability at the highest level of the division.

Reyes, who challenged for the light heavyweight title twice earlier in his career, appears to be rebuilding a compelling case for another shot at the top of the 205-pound rankings.
