Slavko Vincic wept and buried his head in his hands when FIFA officials told him he would referee Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Footage released by FIFA showed the 46-year-old Slovenian breaking down at the announcement before composing himself, embracing a fellow official, and collecting his final shirt — his name already printed on the back.

“Playing with golden stripes is something beautiful. I am sure you agree with me. It’s beautiful, it’s absolutely great. As well as it’s great the referee will be Slavko,” the announcement read.

Vincic arrives at the final as one of Europe’s most decorated officials. He refereed the 2024 UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium and the 2022 UEFA Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers, establishing himself as UEFA’s go-to referee for its biggest occasions.

At this summer’s World Cup, Vincic has taken charge of three matches: the group stage games between Brazil and Morocco and between Jordan and Algeria, and the round of 32 clash between Mexico and Ecuador. That last fixture drew widespread attention after he dismissed Ecuador defender Piero Hincapie under the anti-discrimination protocol for speaking to an opponent while covering his mouth.

Sunday’s final will not be the first time Vincic has officiated either finalist. He was the referee for Spain’s 1-0 group stage win over Italy at Euro 2024, and he was in charge when Argentina lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Vincic will be assisted by fellow Slovenians Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic, with Jordan’s Adham Makhadmeh appointed as fourth official.
