England’s World Cup third-place play-off against France on Saturday night faces the prospect of a delay or suspension, with thunderstorms forecast near Miami Stadium around kick-off at 10pm UK time.

FIFA regulations require play to be halted if lightning is detected within eight miles of the venue, with a mandatory 30-minute stand-down period after each strike before the match can resume. BBC weather forecasts predict “thundery showers and a moderate breeze” in the Miami area between three and five hours before kick-off, though those predictions may shift as the fixture draws closer.

The situation is complicated by Miami Stadium’s lack of a fully retractable roof, leaving the pitch exposed to the elements. Enclosed venues used elsewhere at this World Cup — in Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, and Vancouver — would not face the same problem. Several matches at the tournament have already been disrupted by lightning delays, including England’s round-of-16 tie against Mexico, which was pushed back by an hour due to severe weather near the Azteca Stadium.

Both sides arrive in Miami having lost their respective semi-finals as favourites. Thomas Tuchel’s England were beaten by Argentina, while Didier Deschamps’ France fell to Spain. England also carry one fewer day of recovery than their opponents heading into the fixture.

Tuchel was candid about the emotional difficulty of preparing his squad for a match neither side wanted to be playing. “None of our players and none of the French players want to play this match,” he said after the semi-final defeat. “They want to play the final. We gave everything to achieve that.”

The German coach acknowledged the achievement of reaching the last four while accepting it offered little consolation. “We’ll have to wait four years before participating in another World Cup. Reaching the semi-finals is already an achievement in itself, of course. Many great footballing nations are eliminated before the semi-finals. It’s an achievement, but nobody wants to hear that at the moment, myself included, because we’re very demanding of ourselves.”

Despite the circumstances, England have the chance to record their best World Cup finish since winning the tournament in 1966. They lost both of their previous third-place play-offs — to Italy in 1990 and Belgium in 2018.
