The United States Soccer Federation has thanked supporters following the USMNT’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, acknowledging record viewership and stadium turnout while pledging to improve after a round-of-16 defeat to Belgium.

A day after the 4-1 loss to Belgium ended their tournament, the federation published a bilingual statement in English and Spanish. “When we asked, ‘why not us?’ you answered,” it read. “You filled stadiums. You brought the game into your homes, bars, parks and communities across the country. Every time our players stepped onto the field, they carried your support with them.”

The 2026 tournament — the first men’s World Cup held on American soil since 1994 — produced a genuine milestone for the programme. The USA won three matches at a men’s World Cup for the first time in federation history, topping Group D before defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32.

Yet the round of 16 proved a familiar barrier. The 4-1 defeat to Belgium marked the third consecutive World Cup in which the United States has been eliminated at that stage, and the team has not reached the quarterfinals since 2002.

The federation addressed that shortfall directly. “We will learn from this,” the statement continued. “We will get better to compete with the world’s best. And we will keep doing the work because that’s what this team and this country expects of us.”

Beyond the results, the tournament generated significant cultural momentum. Viewership for USMNT matches set records, and the federation highlighted the scenes at stadiums, viewing parties, and public spaces throughout the run.

The statement closed with a line that had become the team’s unofficial anthem during the tournament — a nod to the John Denver classic that echoed around venues whenever the Americans played: “Country roads, take us home. We’ll see you there.”
