BBC to stay in Salford studio until World Cup semi-finals in cost-saving move
The BBC will not travel to the United States until the semi-final stage of the 2026 World Cup, conducting most of their coverage from their Salford studio while ITV broadcast from a rooftop set in Brooklyn, New York.
The BBC will remain in their Salford studio for all but the final days of the 2026 World Cup, with the national broadcaster confirming they will not travel to the United States until the semi-final stage — a decision driven by cost-saving considerations given the corporation’s licence-fee funding model. Many observers had expected the BBC to fly out for the knockout rounds, but that changeover passed without a change of location, with the quarter-finals now approaching.
The BBC hold the rights to just one of the three quarter-final fixtures — Spain versus Belgium — with ITV covering the other three, including Norway’s meeting with England. That limited presence in the schedule makes the delayed travel more logistically defensible: flying a full production team to the United States for a single match would represent poor value against the licence fee.
For the semi-finals, the BBC have first pick of fixtures and would select England’s match should the Three Lions progress past Norway. That game, should it materialise, would be the first time BBC presenters and pundits — a panel that has included Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart — are on the ground in America.
Star presenter Mark Chapman will travel to the United States earlier than the main BBC television team to host England versus Norway coverage for BBC Radio 5 Live. Gabby Logan will present the final in New York, becoming the first woman to do so.
The BBC did set a record audience for a live UK broadcast between 2am and 4am for their coverage of England’s last-16 clash with Mexico, suggesting the Salford-based approach has not deterred viewers despite the aesthetic gap between the two broadcasters’ setups.
The first semi-final — featuring the winners of France or Morocco against Spain or Belgium — is scheduled for Tuesday 14 July with an 8pm BST kick-off.
