Garnacho's Chelsea exit could hand Manchester United a second sell-on windfall
Alejandro Garnacho is being linked with a move to Roma after a difficult debut season at Chelsea, and Manchester United stand to collect a 10 per cent sell-on fee from any transfer — adding to the windfall expected from Mason Greenwood's impending move to Fenerbahce.
Manchester United could pocket a second significant sell-on payment this summer as Alejandro Garnacho edges closer to leaving Chelsea, with Roma emerging as the most likely destination for the Argentine winger.
Garnacho joined Chelsea from Old Trafford last summer for £40 million, but made little impression at Stamford Bridge as the Blues finished tenth in the Premier League and missed out on European football entirely. Chelsea are now reported to be willing to sell him and are listening to offers of around £42.5 million, according to the Press Association.
United negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of last summer’s deal, meaning they would be entitled to a slice of any future fee Chelsea receive. Because Garnacho came through United’s academy — having originally joined from Atletico Madrid for just £100,000 in 2020 — the initial £40 million sale was recorded as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, and any sell-on income would carry the same accounting benefit.
Reports from Italy suggest Roma are interested in the 22-year-old, with the Serie A club’s qualification for the Champions League giving them the financial footing to pursue a permanent deal. However, they are said to prefer a loan arrangement with an option to buy.
The Garnacho development comes alongside a separate windfall linked to Mason Greenwood. According to ESPN, both Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have agreed deals with Marseille for the forward, who has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for the French club since joining in the summer of 2024. United hold a sell-on clause understood to be between 40 and 50 per cent of any future sale, which would yield approximately £11.9 million if Greenwood moves to Fenerbahce for a reported €40 million plus bonuses, or around £13.3 million if he returns to Atletico Madrid.
Greenwood’s former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has spoken in glowing terms about the forward’s development. “I see him every day, he has huge potential,” De Zerbi said. “I don’t see any other players in Europe at the same level.”
Together, the two potential sell-on payments represent a meaningful financial boost for United as the club navigates its own summer rebuild.
