Manchester United have been left to rebuild their midfield transfer plans from scratch after losing three targets in quick succession, with Mateus Fernandes, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali all moving to other clubs this summer.

Fernandes, 21, has joined Tottenham for £85 million after United declined to match that valuation, having assessed the player as worth less and harbouring doubts over his commitment to a move to Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder’s departure from the shortlist followed United pulling out of the race for Anderson, who is joining Manchester City for £116 million despite having been United’s primary midfield target this window.

Tonali, the Italy international, had also been scouted by United earlier in the year, but Tottenham have now agreed a deal worth £100 million to sign the Newcastle midfielder, closing off that avenue entirely.

With three options gone, United are taking stock before returning to the market. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, 22, has emerged as a credible alternative — the club are long-term admirers of the midfielder, though Arsenal are also tracking him. Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni remains on the shortlist, although there is no indication yet that Madrid are prepared to sell.

The situation has been further complicated by a serious knee injury to Manuel Ugarte, which may prompt United to pursue a third midfield signing. That addition is expected to be a lower-profile acquisition rather than a marquee arrival.

United have, however, already secured one piece of midfield business, agreeing a £35 million deal with Atalanta for Ederson. The Brazilian will complete his move once his country’s World Cup campaign concludes.
