Tottenham sign Mateus Fernandes for €99m, club record broken
Tottenham officially confirmed on Thursday the transfer of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million (€99m), a record amount in the history of the London club.
Tottenham officially confirmed on Thursday the transfer of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million, approximately €99 million. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder becomes the most expensive signing in Spurs history, surpassing all previous club records.
PSG and Real Madrid were among the contenders for the player, but Mateus Fernandes ultimately chose to stay in London. The role of Roberto De Zerbi, appointed Tottenham manager on 31 March, weighed heavily in the balance. “I am very excited for this next step. Spurs are a huge club and Roberto De Zerbi was a key element in my decision to join the team,” the player said in an official statement. “When we spoke, it was very special. We see football the same way.”
This record could prove short-lived, however: the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for approximately €115 million is reportedly imminent according to several sources. Tottenham, which narrowly avoided relegation in the previous Premier League season, is embarking on a massive recruitment drive to return to the upper echelons of English and European football.
