United face Ederson medical doubt while Greenwood sale could net £13m windfall
Manchester United's £38m move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson is in doubt after a reported knee issue emerged during his medical, while a sell-on clause could earn the club up to £13.3m if Mason Greenwood leaves Marseille for Atletico Madrid or Fenerbahce.
Manchester United’s summer transfer window has hit fresh turbulence, with a £38m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson thrown into uncertainty after a reported knee problem surfaced during his medical in the UK, even as the club stands to pocket up to £13.3m from Mason Greenwood’s likely departure from Marseille.
Ederson deal in the balance
Reports emerged on Friday evening that Ederson’s move to Old Trafford had collapsed following concerns over an underlying knee issue discovered during his medical examination. United had agreed a fee of just over £38m with Atalanta and finalised personal terms with the 27-year-old Brazil international, who had himself hinted during the World Cup that the transfer was effectively done.
However, sources close to the club, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, pushed back on claims the deal was dead. United internally denied the transfer had fallen through, with the suggestion that reports of its collapse were designed to increase pressure on the club to close the agreement quickly. The situation remains unresolved, and it is unclear whether the signing will ultimately be completed.
The uncertainty is a further setback for a window that has already failed to meet expectations. United secured the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a £50m deal, but the Brazilian midfielder is considered a modest return given the calibre of targets — including Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes — who moved to Premier League rivals instead.
Greenwood sell-on clause set to be triggered
On a more straightforward note, United look set to benefit financially from Mason Greenwood’s next move. According to ESPN, both Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have agreed deals with Marseille for the 24-year-old forward.
Greenwood joined Marseille in July 2024 for £26.6m in a transfer that included a sell-on clause. That clause is now set to be activated: United would receive €14m (approximately £11.9m) if Greenwood moves to Fenerbahce, or €15.7m (approximately £13.3m) if he completes a return to Madrid, where he previously had a spell with Getafe.
The incoming fee would offer Ineos some financial flexibility as they continue to navigate a competitive and inflated transfer market, though it does little to address the more pressing question of whether United can still strengthen the squad before the window closes.
