United close in on Ederson and Santos while Joao Gomes emerges as midfield target
Manchester United are pressing ahead with a £48m deal for Atalanta goalkeeper Ederson despite reports the move has collapsed, while a £48m agreement for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos is already in place and Joao Gomes has been identified as a further midfield option.
Manchester United are pushing to complete a £48m signing of Atalanta and Brazil goalkeeper Ederson, with the club denying reports that the deal has fallen through. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ederson has already signed his United contract, with a formal club announcement expected to follow.
The move for Ederson sits alongside a separate agreement to bring Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos to Old Trafford in a deal worth £48m, rising to a potential £50m with add-ons. Santos’s arrival would represent a significant investment in a midfield United have been working to reshape throughout the summer window.
United have also registered interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, whose proposed move to Atletico Madrid recently collapsed. According to Brazilian outlet Globo, both United and Liverpool have made contact to gather information on Gomes’s valuation and the conditions of a potential deal. Atletico had reportedly agreed a €45m (£38m) fee before negotiations broke down.
The club’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements has been selective. United opted against meeting the asking prices for Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Elliot Anderson, though a wider shortlist that includes Alex Scott, Sander Berge, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Felix Nmecha has been drawn up — none of whom are expected to come cheaply.
Off the pitch, United have formally parted ways with Casemiro following the expiration of his contract, while Andre Onana has returned to Turkey on another season-long loan at Trabzonspor.
The future of Marcus Rashford also remains unresolved. Barcelona chose not to trigger the option to make his loan move permanent, and Rashford is currently expected to return to Carrington for pre-season once England’s World Cup campaign concludes. Manager Michael Carrick and the recruitment team will be looking to have the bulk of their summer business concluded before the squad reassembles.
