Haaland rated 4/10 by Norwegian media as Bellingham double sends England into World Cup semi-finals
Jude Bellingham scored twice, including a third-minute extra-time winner, as England defeated Norway 2-1 in Miami to reach their fourth ever World Cup semi-final. Erling Haaland, who had scored seven goals in the tournament, was substituted without impact and savaged by his home press.
Jude Bellingham’s extra-time double secured England a 2-1 victory over Norway in their World Cup quarter-final in Miami on Saturday, sending Thomas Tuchel’s side into the last four and leaving Erling Haaland to face a scathing verdict from the Norwegian media.
Andreas Schjelderup gave Norway the lead in the 36th minute, but Bellingham equalised in first-half stoppage time. With neither side able to find a winner in 90 minutes, the Real Madrid midfielder struck again in the third minute of extra time to settle the contest and book England’s place in their fourth ever World Cup semi-final.
Much of the pre-match focus had fallen on Haaland, who arrived in Miami having scored seven goals in the tournament and was widely expected to test England’s defence. The Manchester City striker never found his footing, however, and was substituted during extra time without having made a decisive contribution.
Norwegian outlet Dagbladet awarded Haaland a 4/10, writing: “He had a few opportunities but failed to capitalise on them. It turned out to be a disappointing quarter-final. His body language was off.” He was among the lowest-rated players in their assessment, sitting just above Alexander Sorloth and goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, who both received 3/10s.
Nyland drew particular criticism after a costly error contributed directly to England’s winner. Dagbladet wrote: “The goalkeeper started well, but then the blunders came. First, a shocking clearance, then the rebound that put England 2-1 up. Terrible, coming after a good World Cup.”
Online outlet Nettavisen were slightly more generous to Haaland in their official rating, giving him 6/10 and crediting his pressing and physicality, noting that he forced John Stones into a spill just before half-time. But Norwegian supporters voting on the same platform were less forgiving, giving the striker a 4/10. Nettavisen’s report noted that Haaland had a goal disallowed late in the match after Elliot Anderson went to ground following a challenge, adding further frustration to his evening.
England now advance to the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent, with Bellingham firmly established as the tournament’s standout performer.
