Unai Simón extended his World Cup shutout streak to 609 minutes as Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in Arlington on Monday, setting a new record for consecutive clean sheets in the tournament’s history and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Spain’s sixth straight World Cup match without conceding breaks a tie with Italy (1990) and Switzerland (2006–10), the previous joint-record holders. The streak dates back to a 0-0 draw against Morocco in the 2022 round of 16 — a match Spain ultimately lost on penalties — and has continued through this tournament’s opening scoreless draw against Cape Verde and four successive shutout victories.

Simón himself surpassed the previous individual record of 517 consecutive scoreless minutes during Spain’s 3-0 win over Austria in the last 16 on Thursday. That benchmark had been set by Italy’s Walter Zenga across five clean sheets at the 1990 World Cup on home soil. The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper’s current streak began in Qatar during the 2022 group stage, in a 2-1 defeat to Japan.

For all the record-breaking numbers, Monday’s win was not without its moments of danger. Simón had made just four saves across the entire tournament heading into the Portugal game — Austria managed no shots on target — but was tested twice in the first half by Cristiano Ronaldo. The second stop was the more demanding of the two: a diving reach to claw the ball away with both hands while still airborne, after a header from José Sá had glanced off Simón’s shoulder and fallen invitingly to Ronaldo.

The 29-year-old’s composure under that pressure underlined why Spain’s defensive record has become one of the defining stories of the tournament. With a quarterfinal place secured and the record books rewritten, Simón and Spain will look to extend the streak further.
