Mexico's World Cup exit costs Las Vegas high-roller $1 million as England win 3-2
A bettor spread $1 million across two wagers on Mexico to advance at the 2026 World Cup, only to watch England edge a thriller 3-2. Elsewhere, a $631,000 France bet paid out after a 3-0 win over Sweden.
A Las Vegas high-roller lost $1 million on Mexico’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup after England defeated El Tri 3-2 in a dramatic Sunday clash, according to wager data from Station Sports sportsbooks around Las Vegas.
The bettor placed the seven-figure sum across two wagers in the To Advance market before kick-off. England appeared to be cruising when Jude Bellingham scored twice in less than two minutes to put his side 2-0 up inside 38 minutes. Mexico pulled one back before half-time, and an England red card early in the second period turned the match into a genuine thriller. Despite sustained Mexican pressure in the closing stages, England held on to win 3-2, sending the million-dollar stake to the house.
Station Sports, which operates hotel and casino sportsbooks in the Las Vegas area, has repeatedly attracted the largest individual wagers in the 2026 World Cup betting market — a pattern that has drawn social-media speculation that the same customer is behind multiple high-profile bets, though Station has not confirmed that.
Not every big wager ended in heartbreak. A Caesars Sports customer who staked $49,052.27 on Over 2.5 goals in Norway vs. Brazil was rewarded in the final moments of the match. With Norway leading 2-0 deep into stoppage time, Brazil were awarded a penalty, which Neymar converted to make it 2-1 — pushing the total past the line. The bettor collected $32,701.51 in profit for a total payout of $81,753.78.
Meanwhile, a Hard Rock Bet customer took a far less nerve-wracking route to a return. The bettor placed $631,000 on France — listed as heavy favourites at -850 — to beat Sweden in their Round of 32 tie on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France won 3-0, continuing a dominant tournament run that has seen them outscore opponents 14-2 across five matches. The winning bettor pocketed $74,235 in profit for a total payout of $705,235.
France remain the overall favourites to lift the trophy, and with a four-year-old parlay involving Colombia also reportedly still live heading into the later rounds, the 2026 World Cup is generating betting volumes and individual stake sizes more commonly associated with the Super Bowl.
