Ugarte targets swift return from knee injury with help of psychologist sessions
Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, sidelined since tearing his knee in Uruguay's Copa América loss to Spain, has revealed he is working with a psychologist to manage the mental demands of his recovery.
Manuel Ugarte is leaning on psychological support to navigate one of the most difficult periods of his career, after the Manchester United midfielder suffered a serious knee injury during Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Spain at the Copa América.
The 25-year-old was hurt in an accidental collision with team-mate Mathias Olivera, who tumbled onto Ugarte’s outstretched leg after reaching the ball first. Ugarte was carried off on a stretcher in tears, returned to Manchester, and underwent successful surgery before beginning his rehabilitation over the summer. A firm return date has yet to be confirmed.
Speaking to ESPN, Ugarte explained how regular sessions with a psychologist have helped him cope with the prolonged absence. “He helps me a lot because he makes me look beyond the day-to-day,” the Uruguayan said. “Sometimes you get angry about things that happen during the day which aren’t worth it. We always talk a lot about everything, not just sport, but also on a personal level.”
Ugarte said the conversations range widely — including discussions about books — and that the hours pass quickly as a result. “That helps me become aware of what I’ve achieved, where I am, and I really enjoy it,” he added.
He also stressed that mental wellbeing has a direct bearing on performance. “It’s a huge help. Behind an athlete there’s a person. How you perform, work and act in sport is directly related to your personal life, so it’s something important and I’m very happy to continue working with him.”
With Ugarte ruled out for a minimum of 28 consecutive days, FIFA’s Club Protection Programme has covered his wages up to a ceiling of €7.5 million (£6.6m) for the duration of his absence.
The midfielder’s spell on the sidelines has coincided with United bringing in three new midfielders during the summer transfer window: Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba. Those arrivals have prompted speculation about Ugarte’s long-term future at Old Trafford, though any potential departure could not materialistically happen before the January transfer window at the earliest. He joined from Paris Saint-Germain for £42 million in 2024 and is contracted to the club until the summer of 2029.
