Tyron Woodley storms back from 8-0 deficit to defeat Joaquin Buckley at RAF 12
Tyron Woodley trailed Joaquin Buckley by eight points after the opening period at RAF 12 on Saturday, but the former UFC champion regrouped to win 14-8 in a remarkable wrestling comeback, setting up a main event clash with Khamzat Chimaev in Russia on September 5.
Tyron Woodley overcame an eight-point deficit to defeat Joaquin Buckley 14-8 at RAF 12 on Saturday, completing one of the more dramatic comebacks of his competitive career in his first return to the wrestling mats in nearly two decades.
The former UFC welterweight champion, a two-time All-American at the University of Missouri, was expected to hold the technical edge over Buckley — but the early stages told a different story. Buckley, who missed weight by seven pounds and looked noticeably larger than Woodley, landed a pair of throws in the opening period to surge into an 8-0 lead and briefly appeared on course for an upset.
Woodley steadied himself heading into the second period, methodically clawing back points through a series of pushouts before landing a significant takedown of his own, followed by a gut wrench and turn that levelled the contest and shifted the momentum decisively in his favour.
With time winding down, Buckley attempted a desperation move to extend his score, but Woodley read it and reversed him, adding another four points with a well-timed takedown. By the end of the third period, Woodley had turned an 8-0 deficit into a 14-8 victory.
“I knew better [than to underestimate Buckley],” Woodley said after the match. “It’s bragging rights. When I got down, I didn’t lose my composure.”
Woodley acknowledged the result carried personal significance, noting he had struggled to recover from early deficits throughout his MMA career. The win also arrives at an ideal moment: he was already scheduled to face fellow former UFC champion Khamzat Chimaev in a RAF main event in Russia on September 5, and he now heads into that bout with momentum behind him.
