Transfer deadline day: everything Premier League clubs need to know before 11pm tonight

The Premier League summer transfer window shuts at 11pm on Tuesday, September 1, leaving English top-flight and EFL clubs a shrinking window to complete any outstanding business. Once that cutoff passes, clubs are barred from registering new players from other teams.

Deal sheet extensions

Clubs that submit a completed deal sheet before 11pm are granted a two-hour grace period, pushing their paperwork deadline to 1am. A deal sheet is a formal document submitted to the league confirming that an agreement between clubs has already been reached — it buys recruitment teams extra time to finalise the administrative side of a move, not to negotiate one.

Outgoing transfers after the deadline

Once the English window closes, Premier League clubs can still sell or loan players abroad, provided the buying club’s domestic window remains open. The restriction applies only to inbound registrations within England.

When new signings can play

For a deadline-day arrival to be eligible for the following weekend’s fixtures, they must be officially registered with the Premier League by 12pm on the last working day before the match. With the next Premier League round scheduled for Friday, September 4, clubs have sufficient time to complete registration after the window closes.

Free agents are exempt

The window’s constraints do not apply to out-of-contract players. Free agents can be signed by English clubs at any point in the season, though clubs must still comply with squad size regulations.

25-man squad submissions

Following the close of the window, every Premier League club must submit a finalised 25-man squad list for the first half of the season. Managers face limits on the number of non-homegrown players they can include, though eligible under-21 players do not count toward that cap.
