Glazers turn on Ratcliffe as Carrick fights to save his job before Chelsea trip
Manchester United face Chelsea on Saturday with Michael Carrick winless in eight games, while the Glazer family have reportedly grown frustrated with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's cost-cutting approach since taking charge of football operations.
Manchester United travel to Chelsea on Saturday with manager Michael Carrick under mounting pressure after eight games without a win, as tensions between majority owners the Glazer family and minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly reach breaking point.
Carrick has so far survived the axe despite a run that includes a 4-1 Champions League defeat away to Como and a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth last Sunday. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea are favourites heading into the lunchtime Premier League fixture, and another poor result could prove decisive for the former midfielder’s future.
Behind the scenes, the club’s ownership structure is generating its own turbulence. The Glazers, who retain their majority shareholding, granted Ratcliffe and his Ineos team full autonomy over football operations following his £1.25 billion investment. According to the Mail, that arrangement has soured. “It’s a travesty and not what they expected or were promised,” a source with social ties to the family said. “They have never run the club this way.” A further source told ESPN that Ratcliffe’s scaling back of numerous departments is at odds with his previously stated strategy.
Ratcliffe’s tenure has been defined by extensive cost-cutting measures that drew widespread criticism from supporters and pundits alike, and the on-pitch results have failed to provide any cover for the off-field friction.
Carrick’s options in attack have also been severely limited. Benjamin Sesko, signed to lead the line, is now unlikely to feature until the new year after his shin injury proved considerably more serious than first thought. Bryan Mbeumo has been deployed out of position as a makeshift centre-forward, while Joshua Zirkzee remains out of favour.
With the January transfer window approaching, United are weighing reinforcements, though mid-season options are typically limited. The Athletic reports that Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is among the names under consideration. A move appears highly unlikely, however — not only because of the fierce rivalry between the two clubs, but because Calvert-Lewin has rediscovered his best form under Daniel Farke at Elland Road and would almost certainly face a reduced role at Old Trafford.
Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge represents a pivotal moment for Carrick, with the United hierarchy’s patience — and the Glazers’ tolerance of the current direction — showing clear signs of strain.
