Trabzonspor dreams of Deschamps, but the path remains highly unlikely

Trabzonspor has officially parted ways with manager Fatih Tekke, leaving vacant one of Turkey’s most prominent benches. The Black Sea club, eliminated prematurely from European competitions early in the season, reached an agreement with the coach to end their collaboration.

The announcement was enough to ignite supporters on X and dedicated club forums: what if Didier Deschamps, free since the end of his historic 14-year tenure as France head coach, took the reins at Trabzonspor? The double World Cup winner — as a player in 1998, as manager in 2018 — embodies for some local fans the ideal profile to restore the club’s lustre in the face of Istanbul’s giants.

Reality, however, is more nuanced. Deschamps has certainly expressed a desire to return to a club bench fairly quickly, but he has also said he needs a break to recharge his batteries after the World Cup in the United States. This need for decompression was reinforced following a painful summer, marked by the death of his father, prompting him to prioritise his family before diving back into club football.

On the Turkish press side, supporters’ enthusiasm around the Deschamps option is noted, but specialist media remain pragmatic. A shortlist of more accessible candidates is already circulating, with former Belgium manager Rudi Garcia prominent on it, experienced in European competition.
