Tom Nolan credits MMA with escaping crime-ridden hometown ahead of UFC Vegas 123 main event
Australian lightweight Tom Nolan headlines UFC Vegas 123 against Renato Moicano on Oct. 31 in Las Vegas, and says MMA was his route out of a small town he describes as Australia's theft and drug capital.
Tom Nolan will headline UFC Vegas 123 against Renato “Money” Moicano on 31 October at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas — and the Australian lightweight says the sport gave him a way out of a hometown he describes as one of Australia’s most troubled.
Speaking at UFC media day ahead of his first UFC main event, Nolan opened up about growing up in a small community where crime and drug use made it hard to imagine a different life. He hopes his journey to the top of a UFC card can show fighters in similar circumstances that ambition is not limited by postcode.
“I come from a very small, small town. It’s like the theft capital of Australia. It’s one of the drug capitals. Not many people really get out of there — you’re not really supposed to, if you’re from there,” Nolan said.
The 31 October bout represents the biggest night of Nolan’s career, and he is already thinking about the message it sends beyond the octagon.
“I like to be able to hopefully someday be an inspiration for other fighters who are on the come up,” he said. “Hopefully they can look at me and go, I can do this. It doesn’t matter where I come from or who I am or what I’m supposed to be.”
Nolan was direct about his original motivation for taking up MMA, framing the sport as an escape route rather than simply a career choice.
“I got into this sport to escape that. And I’m sure there’s plenty of other people who want to escape that. So I would like to be a beacon if I can for that,” he added.
Moicano is a seasoned UFC veteran and a significant step up in competition for Nolan, making the Australian’s main-event billing a notable moment for a fighter who has built his reputation far from the sport’s traditional centres of power.
