Fedor Emelianenko accuses Dana White of changing his story over failed UFC negotiations
MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko has publicly criticised UFC CEO Dana White, claiming the promotion only approached him when he was already under contract elsewhere and that White has repeatedly contradicted himself over their failed negotiations.
Fedor Emelianenko has launched a pointed public criticism of UFC CEO Dana White, accusing him of inconsistency and poor faith over the promotion’s repeated failures to sign the Russian heavyweight legend.
Speaking to Russian YouTube channel Ushatayka, Emelianenko said the UFC showed no interest in him during the periods he was a free agent, only to pursue him after he had already committed to other promotions — most notably Strikeforce. He argued that accepting a UFC offer while under contract would have exposed him to legal proceedings and potentially kept him out of competition entirely.
“Honestly, I didn’t understand the point of his actions,” Emelianenko said. “He came over saying, ‘I want you to fight for me.’ He made that very clear, but one fight earlier, I’d been a free agent. I was free and they didn’t sign me. It happened every time.”
Emelianenko was equally direct in his assessment of White’s character as a businessman. “There are different kinds of businessmen. Some are decent and respectful. Some people don’t even need a contract — a handshake is enough, they keep their word. But now Dana is talking all sorts of nonsense. First he wanted me, then he didn’t. Then he regretted it, then he’s glad he never signed me. The man talks and changes his story. He simply doesn’t stand by his words. His way of doing business doesn’t sit well with me.”
Emelianenko also addressed speculation about a potential fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, denying that any formal negotiations had taken place. He said the two had discussed only a hypothetical boxing matchup, not an MMA contest.
The comments add a new dimension to one of MMA’s longest-running what-ifs. Emelianenko, widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights in the sport’s history, never competed inside the UFC octagon despite years of reported interest from both sides. His career included dominant runs in PRIDE FC and Strikeforce before he retired following a loss to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290 in January 2023.
