Tielemans joins Manchester United in £35m deal after Europa League triumph with Villa
Manchester United have completed the signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million, with the Belgium international penning a five-year contract and vowing to chase the 'biggest trophies' at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million, the club confirmed on Tuesday, with the Belgium international committing to a five-year contract as part of a sweeping midfield rebuild at Old Trafford.
Tielemans arrives having made 244 Premier League appearances and captained Belgium at this summer’s World Cup. He was also a key figure in Villa’s Europa League triumph last season, adding a significant winner’s pedigree to a United midfield that has been heavily remodelled this summer.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said in a club statement. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible — it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
United’s director of football Jason Wilcox described the 27-year-old as one of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders over the past seven years. “Youri’s consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad,” Wilcox said. “We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”
The deal makes Tielemans United’s second midfield signing of the week, following the £50 million arrival of Andrey Santos from Chelsea on a five-year contract with an option for a further year. United are expected to make a third midfield addition before the transfer window closes, though a proposed deal for Atalanta’s Ederson has collapsed after the club decided not to proceed at the agreed price and structure following concerns raised during a medical.
The midfield overhaul was prompted by the departure of Casemiro, whose contract expired this summer, while Manuel Ugarte faces an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury at the World Cup.
