Abdelli out with ankle injury, third blow for Marseille during international break
Himad Abdelli was forced off with a left ankle injury in the first half of Algeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi on Tuesday. Marseille, already without Cornelius and Gouiri, fear another prolonged absence.
Himad Abdelli suffered a left ankle injury in the first half of Algeria’s match against Burundi, counting towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, on Tuesday. The Olympique de Marseille midfielder had to be supported by two members of the Algerian medical staff to leave the pitch, replaced by Adem Zorgane just before half-time.
The incident compounds an already worrying situation for Marseille during this international break. Defender Derek Cornelius is suffering from a serious hip injury, while Amine Gouiri has a left quadriceps problem. With Abdelli, three of Bruno Genesio’s regular starters have been hit by physical issues in the space of just a few days.
The severity of the 26-year-old midfielder’s injury remains to be determined, but footage released after the match has fuelled concern at Marseille. Abdelli, who arrived at Marseille last winter from Angers, took time to establish himself before becoming a key part of Genesio’s system: he has started all six matches played by the club so far this season.
