Luca Zidane gifts opening goal on poor clearance, Leganés loses 2-0

Luca Zidane was the unfortunate architect of Leganés’ 2-0 defeat to Castellon on Friday evening in the 7th round of Spanish second division. An error directly responsible for the opening goal weighed heavily on the entire match.

The Algerian goalkeeper had kept his team in the game during the first half-hour. Marca praised two “splendid” saves against Adam Jakobsen and then Ousmane Camara, who could have put the visitors ahead.

But in the 24th minute, a long ball over his shoulder forced him to come far off his line, roughly 30 metres from goal. Seeking to quickly restart play in one touch, Luca Zidane completely messed up his pass. The ball fell to Israel Suero, who turned and finished past the goalkeeper with a left-footed lob to open the scoring.

Leganés failed to mount a comeback and ultimately lost 2-0 at home. Luca Zidane now has six goals conceded in six appearances this season, with three clean sheets to his name. His club sits tenth in the standings.

This defeat came on the same evening his father Zinédine Zidane secured a second consecutive victory on the France national team bench, continuing a flawless start to his mandate as head coach of the Blues.
