Three England seniors complained privately over Tuchel's defensive tactics in Argentina defeat

Three senior England players privately complained about Thomas Tuchel’s tactical decisions during the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, the BBC has reported, with the German coach himself now acknowledging he made changes too early in a game England ultimately lost in stoppage time.

England had led through Anthony Gordon’s goal in the last-four clash, only for Enzo Fernandez to equalise with five minutes remaining before Lautaro Martinez headed in the winner deep into stoppage time. The collapse came after Tuchel introduced Nico O’Reilly, Dan Burn and Ezri Konsa in a shift to a more defensive shape, briefly fielding six defenders on the pitch simultaneously.

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett noted at the time that senior squad members were unhappy: “A lot of England’s players, and some of the senior players, I might say, are not happy with the decisions that Thomas Tuchel took.”

In a documentary released on the England app, Tuchel offered a candid account of his thinking during the match. “Argentina then play very, very quickly,” he said. “A key moment if I look back at it and what happened to my decision-making — we conceded a big, big chance right before the water break. And I thought: ‘We will not survive. This is waiting for death. We don’t have ball possession, we’re not defending good, we’re not defending properly in our 4-4-2. We need help.’”

Tuchel explained that he moved to a 5-3-2 and then a 5-4-1 in quick succession, a sequence he now views as a misjudgement. “Even my mindset is maybe like: ‘Let’s just overcome it.’ And it’s too early. Too early for that mindset,” he admitted.

The coach also acknowledged the personal toll of the result. “No one is more hurt than me, no one wanted it more. They can endlessly torture you and think: ‘If I had done different substitutions, then we would have…’”

Tuchel is set to name his 26-man squad for England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures, with the Three Lions opening their League A campaign against World Cup winners Spain on 26 September.
