Manchester United tried 11 moves to keep 15-year-old JJ Gabriel after shock exit request

Manchester United are facing the prospect of losing highly-rated 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel, who has informed the club of his desire to leave Old Trafford. Barcelona and Real Madrid are reported to be frontrunners for his signature, with Gabriel holding an EU passport that would allow him to move clubs when he turns 16 in October.

The news caught United off guard. Gabriel had been expected to make his senior debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup but was left out of the squad after his exit request emerged. He also missed training on Monday and Tuesday amid the unfolding situation.

United went to considerable lengths to change his mind. Director of football Jason Wilcox and head of negotiations Matt Hargreaves intervened as far back as the summer of 2025, when Gabriel was first linked with a move away, making clear to the teenager that a path to the first team existed.

That message was reinforced when Michael Carrick included Gabriel in the squad for United’s 2026 pre-season tour, where he featured in a friendly against Atletico Madrid — his first experience of men’s football. Former manager Ruben Amorim also spent hours watching footage of the youngster during pre-season to assess his potential before departing in January.

Perhaps the most striking incentive United dangled was the offer of a senior debut that would have broken a club record standing for 70 years. David Gaskell has held the record as United’s youngest debutant since October 1956, when he appeared aged 16 years and 19 days. Gabriel, still 15, would have surpassed that milestone had he featured against Brighton.

Despite all of those efforts, Gabriel appears set to leave. The Mail, which first reported the story, notes that he may now be limited to Under-21 football for the remainder of his time at the club. He has scored twice in two Premier League 2 appearances this season.

Whether Gabriel ultimately moves to Spain or remains in England is still unclear, but United’s failure to keep him — despite a record-breaking carrot and repeated personal interventions from senior staff — underlines the growing difficulty top English clubs face in retaining elite young talent when Europe’s biggest names come calling.
