Thierry Henry had to speak out on Instagram to deny fabricated quotes attributed to him since France’s elimination by Spain at the 2026 World Cup.

A consultant for Fox Sports in the United States alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the 1998 World Cup winner had been complimentary toward the Bleus throughout the tournament, notably praising Didier Deschamps’ attacking choices. But after the defeat to Spain, several social media accounts attributed harsh statements to him: “It was a disgrace,” “I’m tired of hearing about talent,” “Too many players hid when the match got difficult.” Phrases he never uttered.

“I had to put an end to certain rumors and things circulating on social media about what I supposedly said about the France team,” he said in a video posted on his Instagram account. He also explained the mechanism that favors the spread of this misinformation: “I know the videos are geo-targeted and so people in Europe can’t see what I say in the United States.”

Ironically, the X account behind these quotes does specify in its biography that “everything is fictional, no real quotes” — a disclaimer that the vast majority of users who share these posts don’t bother to read.

Henry concluded with a call for vigilance: “Once again, before retweeting or reposting things and debating them, verify if it’s true.”
