Lucas Digne broke his silence two days after conceding the penalty on Lamine Yamal that led to France’s elimination in the 2026 World Cup semi-final against Spain.

The 32-year-old left-back, who became a starter after beginning on the bench in the opening match against Senegal, posted a message on social media. “I am first disappointed in myself,” he wrote, before extending his regret to the entire squad. “Disappointed too for this team, for all the efforts we made and for this incredible group of players.”

Having gone from substitute to starter to scapegoat in a matter of weeks, Digne nevertheless attempted to end on a more positive note. “Despite this immense disappointment, I remain proud to have represented our country, with all its richness, its diversity and all the people who make it up,” he continued. “It’s not over, we have a podium to go and get.”

The defender, rumored to be a likely future Paris Saint-Germain player, is expected to return to the bench for the third-place match against England on Saturday evening. Didier Deschamps, who will play his very last match as head coach of the French national team there, is expected to start Théo Hernandez in the left flank.
