Tamati Ellison reunites with Jason Holland at Blues as defence coach for 2027
Maori All Blacks coach Tamati Ellison has joined the Blues' coaching staff for the 2027 Super Rugby season, reuniting with head coach Jason Holland after the pair worked together in Scott Robertson's All Blacks setup.
Tamati Ellison is returning to the Blues as a member of Jason Holland’s coaching group for the 2027 Super Rugby season, the Auckland franchise confirmed, filling the defensive vacancy left by Craig McGrath’s departure alongside former head coach Vern Cotter to the Queensland Reds.
Ellison and Holland previously worked in tandem under Scott Robertson’s All Blacks staff across the 2024 and 2025 Test seasons. Ellison joined that setup as contact skills coach before stepping into the defence portfolio when Leon MacDonald abruptly left the programme. His coaching path also includes a stint with Robertson at the Crusaders and a head coaching role with the Wellington Lions.
The 43-year-old brings a varied playing résumé to the role — four Test caps for the All Blacks and a Commonwealth Games gold medal in Sevens — as well as a brief personal history with the Blues themselves, having made his Super Rugby debut for the club in 2005.
Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams said the appointment was a natural fit. “Tamati has a deep understanding of the game and team culture, strong leadership qualities and a proven ability to connect with players and help them grow,” Williams said. “His coaching journey over recent years has been impressive, from the provincial game through to Super Rugby and the international arena. He brings valuable experience from some of the best environments in world rugby, and we’re excited about what he’ll add to our programme.”
Ellison said the chance to work alongside Holland again in Auckland was too good to pass up. “The Blues are one of the great clubs in New Zealand rugby, with a proud history and a strong connection to their community,” he said. “When the opportunity came to work alongside Jason and be part of what the club is building for the future, it was one that really appealed to me. There is outstanding talent throughout the organisation and a real desire to keep pushing forward.”
Ellison will continue to serve as Maori All Blacks head coach alongside his new Blues responsibilities.
