Keylock's 18-point haul fires England U20s into winner-takes-all clash with Argentina
Finn Keylock kicked 18 points as England U20s ran in ten tries to demolish illness-hit USA 68-40 at the Avchala Stadium, setting up a decisive Pool A decider against Argentina at the World Rugby U20 Championship.
Finn Keylock contributed 18 points with the boot as England U20s swept past a depleted USA side 68-40 at the Avchala Stadium on Wednesday, securing a winner-takes-all Pool A finale against Argentina at the World Rugby U20 Championship.
The Americans arrived at the ground already in crisis, forced into four late changes minutes before kick-off after a sickness bug swept through their camp. Far from being overwhelmed, they responded with two tries inside the opening ten minutes. Jack Lewis marked his England debut by scoring from a catch-and-drive after just two minutes, and Finlay Cunnison added a second shortly after, with Keylock converting both. USA hit back through Will Derbyshire — one of those late replacements — to make it 14-7 after 13 minutes.
England reasserted control through Ollie Scola and then Jerold Gorleku, who crossed twice before the half-hour mark to secure the bonus point. A Jameson Beatty burst gave USA brief hope before George Pearson punished a fumbled kick-off to send England into the break well clear.
The second half followed a similar pattern of England dominance punctuated by American resilience. Nick Lilley extended the lead after 45 minutes, only for Dane Mitchell to collect a fortunate bounce and sprint the length of the pitch for a stunning individual try. Holder then swerved through to score and convert his own effort, and Mitchell completed a hat-trick with two further finishes that kept the scoreboard ticking for the Eagles.
England ultimately had too much. Replacement scrum-half Jonny Weimann touched down after 64 minutes, Connor Treacey added a ninth try in the 73rd minute, and Tylar Offiah strolled over in the corner two minutes from time to complete the ten-try haul.
The result means England top Pool A heading into next week’s decisive round, where only a win over Argentina will guarantee progression. The last time England and USA met at the Junior World Championships, in 2013, England won 109-0 — Wednesday’s 68-40 scoreline, against a side ravaged by illness, underlines how far the Americans have developed since that record defeat.
