Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the Seleção squad in the middle of an international week in Copenhagen, ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark. The FPF’s disciplinary commission must still determine the exact length of the sanction, which could extend from one to six months.

At 41 years old, the Al-Nassr forward has accepted responsibility for his decision and apologized to Portuguese supporters, but the federation’s regulations left the governing body with no room for maneuver: a player’s early departure during an international break automatically triggers disciplinary proceedings.

Consultant Pierre Ménès finds no mitigating circumstances. “Ronaldo’s statue has been a problem for Portugal’s team for a while now, it inhibits the players,” he observes. “It seems the players have to pass him the ball at all costs. That has really spoiled the last two final tournaments for the national team.” He adds: “His tantrums, which I find unbearable, are tarnishing the end of his international career. It’s a real shame but it’s truly his fault.”

Meanwhile, back in Saudi Arabia, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has found the back of the net with Al-Nassr, scoring the 980th goal of his professional career. A personal milestone that contrasts with the image he left upon departing the national squad.
