Solanke rescues Spurs with stoppage-time equaliser at Old Trafford despite missing hat-trick chances
Dominic Solanke scored in added time to earn Tottenham a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday, cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo's 73rd-minute opener for United — though Solanke admitted he should have had a hat-trick after a dominant first half.
Dominic Solanke scored a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw for Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday, denying Manchester United a victory that would have flattered a side who were second-best for long stretches of the game. Bryan Mbeumo had given United the lead in the 73rd minute, and Rodrigo Bentancur’s straight red card for directing his head toward Luke Shaw five minutes later appeared to have sealed Spurs’ fate — only for Solanke to convert in added time.
Speaking after the final whistle, Solanke was candid about the opportunities Tottenham had squandered before his late intervention. “In the first half we dominated. We weren’t clinical enough — a story of the season. We could have been a few goals ahead,” he said. “I should have had a hat-trick. I wasn’t clinical enough. I know that. But I kept going. I was getting in the right positions to put one away.”
Solanke, who captained the side for the first time, added that the point carried personal significance beyond the result. “It’s my first time being captain, for a great club. To score as well, it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my career.”
The numbers underline just how wasteful Spurs were. Despite generating 1.71 expected goals and dominating possession in the first half, they managed only three shots on target across the entire match. It is a pattern that has defined their season: Tottenham have failed to score in four of their six Premier League games despite a £334 million summer of investment.
Solanke acknowledged the scale of the problem while pointing to Saturday’s late fight as a potential turning point. “We haven’t been good enough this season. Hopefully this is the start of something good,” he said. “The character shown was magnificent. A few times we haven’t reacted in the right way when going a goal down, but today we showed fight and grit.”
For United, the draw extends a difficult start to the season. They created little of note going forward and were fortunate that Spurs’ profligacy kept the scoreline level for so long before Mbeumo’s goal. A point from a game they were second-best in for large periods will offer Ruben Amorim’s side little comfort.
