Sturridge hails 18-year-old Ngumoha's 'God-given ability' after two-assist display rescues Liverpool against Villarreal
Rio Ngumoha became the youngest player in Liverpool's history to record a goal contribution in the Champions League, setting up both goals in a comeback win over Villarreal from two down, drawing widespread praise from Daniel Sturridge, Robbie Fowler, and Alexis Mac Allister.
Rio Ngumoha delivered two assists to help Liverpool overturn a two-goal deficit against Villarreal in the Champions League, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to record a goal contribution in the competition. The 18-year-old set up Ronald Araujo’s equaliser just before half-time before pulling the ball back for Alexis Mac Allister to put Liverpool ahead after the break, with Mac Allister completing a brace to seal the win.
Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge was effusive in his assessment of the teenager’s performance. “Rio Ngumoha was magnificent tonight,” Sturridge said. “Such a threat, and he dedicated himself to his tasks. On the ball this kid has so much potential. What he does with the ball at his feet, that is God-given ability, and his hard work on the training pitch, doing things day in and day out, and being ruthless — he wants to be decisive, and I love that about him.”
Robbie Fowler, another former Liverpool forward, echoed those sentiments. “I think we said early in the game that Liverpool were out of sorts, not playing really well, they were sloppy and giving the ball away, but there was one player you could count on in that first half, that could make something happen, and he carried on in the second half. He was a big, big difference. For the full 70 minutes that he was on, Rio Ngumoha was outstanding.”
Mac Allister, who benefited directly from Ngumoha’s creativity, was equally generous. “Look around Rio, he was amazing tonight. He made the difference. He was really important and I’m glad for him. It’s clear the quality he has. Everyone knows. He worked really hard off the ball.”
Manager Andoni Iraola offered a more measured but still positive verdict, pointing to the areas where Ngumoha continues to develop. “I am really happy with Rio. He is trying to improve everything that we try to correct. He struggled defensively in the first half. The second half was much better. He’s becoming a more complete player. He’s still only 18.”
Ngumoha himself described the night as “up there with one of the best I’ve played,” a sentiment that will do little to dampen the growing expectation surrounding one of English football’s most exciting young talents.
