South Korea players booed home at Incheon Airport after World Cup group-stage exit
South Korea's World Cup squad was met with jeers and angry protests at Incheon Airport on Tuesday after crashing out of the tournament in the group stage, with fans demanding coach Hong Myung-bo resign.
South Korea’s World Cup squad returned to a hostile reception at Incheon Airport on Tuesday, 30 June, as crowds booed the players and coaching staff following an early group-stage exit from the tournament.
Coach Hong Myung-bo’s side failed to advance after losing to both host nation Mexico and South Africa, leaving a 2-1 victory over Czechia as the sole bright spot of their campaign.
Angry supporters chanted “Hong Myung-bo, get out!” and “take responsibility” as the squad arrived, while one fan held up a banner reading “Korean Football Is Dead”, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The scenes reflect deep frustration among South Korean supporters, who had hoped the squad could build on previous World Cup performances. Falling at the group stage — with defeats to the host nation and an African side — has intensified calls for accountability at the top of the national set-up.
