Ronald Koeman resigns as Netherlands head coach after World Cup penalty shootout exit
Ronald Koeman has stepped down as Netherlands head coach following a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco at the World Cup. The 63-year-old announced his resignation on Instagram, saying the manner of his exit 'hurts' despite feeling pride in his career.
Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands head coach after the Oranje were eliminated from the World Cup in a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. The 63-year-old announced his decision on Instagram in the immediate aftermath of the loss, becoming the fifth managerial casualty of the tournament.
Cody Gakpo had given the Netherlands the lead with 18 minutes remaining, but Issa Diop equalised in stoppage time to force a shootout. Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber both failed to convert from 12 yards, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a superb reflex save to deny Crysencio Summerville. Morocco missed two of their own penalties, but Ismael Saibari scored the decisive kick to send the Africa Cup of Nations finalists through.
In his Instagram statement, Koeman reflected on a career that took him to Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ, Feyenoord, Southampton, Everton, FC Barcelona, and two spells with the Dutch national team.
“That is precisely why it hurts that my time with Oranje ends this way,” he wrote. “We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would make history. That did not happen. No one is more disappointed about that than I am. As head coach, you bear that responsibility. I have always felt it and will always continue to feel it.”
Koeman added that, despite the disappointment, pride ultimately prevailed. “I am saying goodbye with mixed feelings. Of course, I would have preferred to conclude my time with Oranje with a world title. Unfortunately, that dream remained unfulfilled. But above all, pride prevails — pride in everything football has brought me, in the people I have met, and in the fact that I have been able to turn my greatest passion into my profession.”
Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the defeat in Mexico, Koeman said he had not yet made a decision on his future before ultimately confirming his exit. “I’m going to reflect on my future. This is straight after a game and the disappointment is so fresh in your mind,” he said.
Koeman joins Scotland head coach Steve Clarke among the managers to have departed their national team roles during this summer’s tournament. The search for his successor at the Netherlands is now expected to begin.
