Galatasaray target Bruno Fernandes but United captain determined to stay for Champions League return
Turkish champions Galatasaray have identified Bruno Fernandes as a summer transfer target, according to reports in Turkey, but the Manchester United captain is said to be firmly opposed to leaving Old Trafford ahead of the club's return to the Champions League.
Bruno Fernandes has emerged as a transfer target for Galatasaray, with Turkish reports claiming the Istanbul club want the Manchester United captain to strengthen their attacking midfield this summer — only for the 31-year-old to have already made clear he has no intention of leaving.
According to TRT Spor, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk identified Fernandes as his primary target for the number 10 role ahead of a season in which both clubs will compete in the Champions League. The report states, however, that Fernandes’s reluctance to depart is “the biggest obstacle” in any potential deal.
“Fernandes wants to continue as captain of the English team, which will compete in the Champions League next season,” TRT Spor reported. “For this reason, the experienced footballer rejected astronomical offers from Saudi Arabian teams, just as he did in the January transfer window.”
This marks the second consecutive window in which Fernandes has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Heavy Saudi Pro League interest in January failed to unsettle him, and he went on to complete what many consider his finest season in a United shirt — claiming both the Premier League Writers’ Association Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Association award, while proving central to the club’s return to European football’s top tier after two seasons away.
Despite Fernandes’s apparent determination to stay, the underlying contract situation adds a layer of complexity for United’s hierarchy. His deal at Old Trafford expires in two years, meaning the club face a narrowing window in which to command a meaningful transfer fee if they ever choose to sell. A decision to hold firm this summer and next would risk losing one of their most important players on a free transfer in 2027, potentially at the age of 33.
For now, TRT Spor reports that Galatasaray’s transfer officials still plan to open talks with both United and Fernandes directly — suggesting the Turkish champions have not yet abandoned hope, even in the face of the player’s stated opposition.
With United back in the Champions League and Fernandes wearing the armband, the Portuguese midfielder’s focus appears firmly fixed on making the most of the club’s renewed standing in Europe rather than pursuing a lucrative exit.
