Sick Volkanovski stops unbeaten Evloev to seal seventh UFC featherweight title defence
Alexander Volkanovski retained the UFC featherweight title at UFC 333 on Saturday, finishing previously unbeaten Movsar Evloev at 4:54 of the second round — all while fighting through illness he said only made the challenge more worthwhile.
Alexander Volkanovski finished previously unbeaten Movsar Evloev (20-1) at 4:54 of the second round at UFC 333 on Saturday to retain the UFC featherweight championship, recording his seventh successful title defence across two reigns. The Australian champion revealed after the fight that he had been ill in the build-up — and that the adversity only added to his satisfaction.
Volkanovski (29-4) earned a performance bonus for the stoppage, handing Evloev the first professional defeat of his career. The finish underlined the champion’s ability to deliver under pressure, arriving despite what he described as a difficult fight camp.
“It feels good,” Volkanovski said in his post-fight interview. “Again, I don’t really care about this, like I really don’t. I just care about overcoming challenges. A guy who was undefeated in front of me, to overcome that and beat him… There’s so many challenges that come with this sport and overcoming them is what really excites me. So, that means so much more to me.”
At the post-fight press conference, Volkanovski addressed his illness directly, framing it as just another obstacle he was glad to have faced.
“It’s all good, it’s a part of the game,” he said. “I started getting sick, I was like, ‘It would’ve been too easy if I wasn’t sick.’ No matter what hurdles are in front of me, this sh*t excites me.”
The victory cements Volkanovski’s status as one of the most decorated featherweight champions in UFC history. His seventh title defence places him among the division’s all-time great title holders, and the manner of Saturday’s win — a bonus-earning finish of an undefeated contender while under the weather — will only reinforce that reputation.
Evloev had entered the contest as one of the most compelling challengers the division had produced in years, arriving with a perfect 20-0 record and a run of dominant performances. Volkanovski ensured that record ended in the second round.
