Preston LaGrange arrived at Meta Apex in Las Vegas as a +400 underdog on two weeks’ notice, then left with a UFC contract after stopping heavy favourite Nell Ariano in the first round of their light heavyweight headliner at Dana White’s Contender Series Season 10, Week 9 on 6 October.

LaGrange (7-1) also moved up a weight class for the opportunity, weighing in at 199.5 pounds. He secured the finish midway through the opening round, impressing UFC CEO Dana White and the promotion’s matchmakers enough to earn a spot on the UFC roster.

“It feels good,” LaGrange said in his post-fight interview. “I am excited to be here, and I am ready to put on a show for the UFC.”

Asked when he would like to make his UFC debut, LaGrange made clear he has no intention of waiting around. “I am always ready,” he said. “I took this fight on a two-week notice, so, you know… I am always ready. I am training year-round, so I will be ready whenever the UFC calls me.”

The victory is a significant leap for the 7-1 fighter, who overcame both the short turnaround and the weight-class jump to outperform expectations on the sport’s most high-profile developmental stage. The Contender Series format places fighters directly in front of UFC decision-makers, with contracts awarded at White’s discretion — making LaGrange’s dominant finish all the more timely.
